REDESIGN FOR TOR BROWSER

Problem statement:

There are several usability issues with ToR browser during the process of installation, configuration, and usage. In this redesign, I focus on the 'Tor Network Settings', which is a configuring dialogue for installation (Fig. 1).

The main usability issue of this dialogue is that users do not know how to choose because they do not understand what do these choices mean (box 1 & 2 in the Fig. 1). This may result from the technical terms that increase users' cognitive load and lower their self-esteem/confidence in using the tool.

Goal of Design:

The goal of design is to allow users to configure the tool without extra mental efforts. In another word, users should be able to know which situation to choose easily and clearly.

Future Work:

Design is always an iterative process. For Tor Browser, I plan to do the following redesign in the near future:

  1. Change the terminology of security setting dialogue

  2. Design the pop-up message to help users solve errors while they encounter the denied message

  3. Conduct another user study to test new design.
