Tor Browser, powered by Tor network, is a security tool that provides online anonymity that can protect users from online surveillance and traffic analysis. Although Tor Browser provides online anonymity and security, users can get confused by its design of interface or features of security.
In this project, my aim is to discover what the usability problems of Tor Browser and redesign it.
ABOUT PROJECT 'S'
Hi there, welcome to my website. I'm Hsiao-Ying Huang, a PhD student in Informatics at UIUC. As you can see in the title, this project focuses on the design for security. The goal of this project is to make security tools more usable and accessible to everyone. And you are going to see how I make it happen in this site!

I will share which security tool I target, how I conduct the user study, and what the redesign is.
WHY SECURITY
'Security is so important, but sometimes...so annoying'
Have you ever forgotten your passwords and gone through a bunch of security questions that you might not even remember what your answers were? Have you ever tried to clean your cookies or would like to change your security preferences on your browsers but didn't know how?
If you had similar experiences, don't worry. You're not alone.

Everyone would agree that our data security is very important and worth of efforts to make technologies secure. However, from the engineering perspective, 'human' is the weakest link of security. When something bad happens, users are at fault.
Clearly, this kind of thinking does not make technologies more secure and sometimes, even worse. So, thinking how to make security more usable from user perspective is absolutely essential.
